How to choose a QR code size for print
A practical guide to matching QR code size, scan distance, contrast, and printed material before you send artwork to production.
Start with the scan distance
A QR code that works on a business card can fail on a wall sign because the camera sees fewer usable pixels from farther away. Start with where the scanner will stand, then choose a physical size that leaves enough detail for the camera to resolve each module.
For close-range material such as cards, table tents, labels, receipts, or packaging, test the code at the exact printed size. For posters, windows, and signs, test from the realistic viewing distance instead of holding the page in your hand.
- Business cards and labels: test at arm's length and avoid very dense codes.
- Menus and flyers: leave enough quiet space so nearby text or images do not touch the symbol.
- Posters and signs: print a sample and scan it from the expected approach path.
Keep the encoded value short
The more information a QR code stores, the more modules it needs. A long URL, full tracking string, or large text block creates a denser symbol, and dense symbols need more physical space to remain reliable.
For print, use a short destination URL where possible and put long explanatory text on the destination page rather than inside the QR code itself. If you must encode a long value, increase the output size and run a scan test before publishing.
Protect contrast and quiet space
A dark foreground on a light background is still the safest choice. Low contrast, transparent backgrounds, reversed colors, textures, and glossy material can all reduce scan reliability.
Do not crop the clear border around the QR code. That quiet space helps the scanner separate the code from the surrounding design. If the code sits inside a busy layout, give it extra blank space rather than letting typography, photos, or borders crowd the edges.
Test the real output
A QR preview on a laptop screen is only a first check. Print a sample, scan it with more than one phone, and test in the lighting where the final material will be used.
If the scan feels slow, make the code larger, simplify the encoded value, improve contrast, or move the code away from reflective folds and curved surfaces. The goal is not just that it scans once, but that ordinary visitors can scan it quickly without effort.
